UAE Employment Visa Explained: Costs, Steps, and Timeline

May 25, 2025

Chapter 1: What is a UAE Employment Visa?

An employment visa is a legal document issued by the UAE government that allows foreign nationals to work in the country. It is part of the residency visa category and is typically sponsored by a UAE-based employer.

Key points:

  • It is valid for up to 2 years (in free zone companies) or 3 years (in mainland companies).

  • Only UAE-registered companies can sponsor employment visas.

  • It is renewable and tied to your employment contract.

Once issued, you are also eligible to obtain a UAE Emirates ID and access services like banking, housing, mobile networks, and more.

Chapter 2: Who Needs an Employment Visa?

Any non-UAE national (expat) planning to work in the country must secure an employment visa. This includes professionals, skilled laborers, executives, and even part-time or contractual employees depending on the terms of work.

Whether you are being hired directly by a private company, a government department, or a free zone authority, your employer must initiate the visa process on your behalf.

Chapter 3: Documents Required for a UAE Employment Visa

To initiate the process, both the employer and the employee must provide specific documents. Here’s what is usually needed:

From the employee:

  • Valid passport (minimum 6 months validity)

  • Passport-sized photographs (white background)

  • Attested academic degrees (if applicable)

  • Previous employment experience letter (if required)

  • Medical fitness certificate (after entry)

From the employer:

  • Valid trade license

  • Establishment card

  • Immigration card

Chapter 4: Step-by-Step Employment Visa Process in the UAE

Let’s walk through each phase of the visa process in a simple, structured way:

Step 1: Job Offer and Labor Approval

The employer sends a job offer which, when signed, is submitted to the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) for labor approval.

Timeframe: 2-5 working days

Step 2: Entry Permit (Pink Visa)

Once labor approval is granted, the employer applies for an "entry permit" (also called pink visa). This allows the employee to enter the UAE legally to complete the visa process.

Timeframe: 3-10 working days

Note: If you're already in the UAE, this step is done as a status change instead of entering again.

Step 3: Medical Test and Biometrics

After arriving in the UAE or completing a status change, the employee must undergo a government-approved medical test and visit the Emirates ID center for fingerprinting and biometrics.

Timeframe: 2-3 working days

Step 4: Visa Stamping on Passport

Following a clear medical result, your passport is submitted to immigration for visa stamping.

Timeframe: 3-7 working days

Step 5: Emirates ID Issuance

You will receive your Emirates ID within a few working days after completing all formalities.

Timeframe: 5-7 working days (sometimes up to 10)

Chapter 5: Total Timeline of Getting an Employment Visa

On average, the entire process takes 2 to 4 weeks, but this can vary depending on:

  • Employer’s internal processing speed

  • Free zone vs. mainland application

  • Employee's current location (inside vs. outside UAE)

  • Time of year (Ramadan, public holidays may delay)

Here’s a summary:

  • Job Offer & MOHRE Approval: 2-5 days

  • Entry Permit: 3-10 days

  • Medical & Biometrics: 2-3 days

  • Visa Stamping: 3-7 days

  • Emirates ID: 5-10 days

Total Estimated Time: 14 to 30 days

Chapter 6: Employment Visa Costs in the UAE

Costs depend on the employer, company category, and location (mainland vs. free zone). Generally, the employer bears most of the cost, but here’s a breakdown:

Typical Employment Visa Cost Range: AED 3,000 to AED 7,000

Cost Breakdown:

  • Entry permit fee

  • Medical test fee (around AED 300-500)

  • Emirates ID fee (AED 370 to AED 1070 depending on duration)

  • Visa stamping (AED 500 to AED 1000)

  • Labor card and other admin charges

Free Zone Employment Visas often include package deals that bundle these services together.

Chapter 7: UAE Employment Visa Renewal

Employment visas are valid for 2-3 years. Renewal is similar to the original process and should start at least 30 days before expiry.

Renewal involves:

  • New medical test

  • New Emirates ID

  • Updated labor contract (if any changes)

Failure to renew before expiry can lead to fines or legal complications.

Chapter 8: Can You Change Jobs on an Employment Visa?

Yes, but with specific rules:

  • You must serve your notice period (usually 30 days)

  • Get a No Objection Certificate (NOC) if required

  • Your new employer must apply for a fresh employment visa

Your old visa is cancelled first, and then the new one begins. You usually remain inside the UAE during this switch.

Chapter 9: Common Issues and How to Avoid Them

  1. Delayed Documents: Always keep your passport and photos ready

  2. Medical Test Failure: Health issues like infectious diseases may result in rejection

  3. Incorrect Information: Errors in names, passport numbers can delay processing

  4. Employer Not Following Up: Stay in regular contact with HR or your PRO

Tip: Always double-check application forms before submission.
